4 steps to take after you are hurt as a construction worker

On Behalf of | Jun 15, 2023 | Workers' Compensation

Working in the construction industry demands physical exertion and exposes individuals to potential hazards. Unfortunately, accidents and injuries can occur, impacting the well-being and livelihood of construction workers.

If you sustain an injury while working on a construction site in North Carolina, you can protect your rights and ensure proper medical treatment and compensation by taking immediate steps.

1. Report the injury to your employer

The first step after sustaining an injury as a construction worker is to promptly report the incident to your employer. Inform your supervisor, manager or another designated individual about the details of the accident and your resulting injuries. Document the incident in writing, including the date, time, location and a clear description of the events.

Reporting the injury promptly establishes a record of the incident and strengthens your claim for workers’ compensation benefits.

2. Seek medical attention

Following an injury, seek immediate medical attention to assess the extent of your injuries. Notify your employer of your intent to seek medical treatment and request a list of authorized healthcare providers, if applicable.

Follow the recommended treatment plan and attend follow-up appointments as advised by the healthcare professional. Keep detailed records of all medical visits, procedures, medications and expenses associated with your injury.

3. File a workers’ compensation claim

To secure your workers’ comp benefits, file a claim as soon as possible. Complete a Form 18 and notify the North Carolina Industrial Commission by submitting it to the commission and your employer. Provide accurate and detailed information about the accident, your injuries and the medical treatment received.

Filing a claim initiates the process of seeking compensation for medical expenses, lost wages and other eligible benefits.

4. Cooperate with the claims process

Throughout the workers’ compensation claims process, fully cooperate and promptly provide any requested information or documentation. Respond to inquiries from your employer’s insurance company and the NCIC, providing accurate and truthful information. Cooperating with the claims process facilitates the review and evaluation of your claim, ensuring a timely resolution.

The workers’ compensation process can be a stressful thing to handle while you are trying to heal from your injuries. When you know what steps to take, it can make a hard time easier to manage.
