Speeding and the severity of traffic crash injuries

On Behalf of | Jul 5, 2023 | Personal Injury

Many different factors can lead to a devastating traffic collision, from weather conditions and bad signage to intoxicated or distracted drivers. All drivers should realize that speeding not only increases the likelihood of a collision on the road, but it also results in more severe injuries when accidents occur. After all, speeding increases the force of impact when vehicles collide.

Sadly, many drivers keep speeding for numerous reasons, endangering lives and causing significant and life-altering injuries.

Statistics on speeding

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that speeding accidents resulted in the loss of more than 12,300 lives over the course of 2021. Out of all traffic accident deaths, speeding played a role in 29% of these fatalities during 2021.

Drivers go too fast for many reasons, whether they do not want to arrive to work late, they feel anonymous behind the wheel or they struggle with road rage.

The consequences of speeding

Speeding can increase the chances of vehicles crashing, and it also increases the severity of a victim’s injuries when a collision happens. Additionally, speeding increases the chances of a driver losing control of their vehicle, makes it more difficult to stop and reduces the efficacy of protective equipment.

On a daily basis, far too many reckless drivers disregard traffic safety and exceed the speed limit. Speeding when weather conditions deteriorate due to fog or rain becomes particularly dangerous, and those who drive too fast must face consequences when they cause an accident that leaves someone seriously injured.
